Put MP4 clips into one video in the right order

Decide whether a new video encode is acceptable

A timeline editor is useful when clips have different dimensions, need transitions or need visual changes. A stream-copy workflow aims to keep the existing encoded video, but files must be compatible and it offers less freedom at joins.

Matching .mp4 extensions do not establish matching codecs or stream layouts. Before trying a copy-based join, inspect the video and audio properties. If the tools report incompatible streams, a timeline export with consistent output settings is a more appropriate route.

Use a video timeline for ordinary assembly

1. In Microsoft Clipchamp, import the source clips and add them side by side on the same timeline track in the required order.
2. Trim the ends that should not appear, remove unintended gaps and preview across each join.
3. Choose a consistent aspect ratio and an export quality appropriate to the source and destination.
4. Save the result as a new file and check its beginning, every join and its ending.

When copying compatible streams is the goal

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer accepts a text list of files. The documented requirement is matching streams, including codec and time base. A copy-based concat does not automatically resize clips, create transitions or fix incompatible streams.

For two compatible test clips in one folder, a list can contain file 'part1.mp4' on its first line and file 'part2.mp4' on its second. With FFmpeg installed, the basic command is: ffmpeg -f concat -i inputs.txt -c copy joined.mp4

Use new filenames and start with short copies. If you see timestamp errors, missing sound or a frozen section, inspect compatibility instead of treating a completed command as proof of a correct join.

If you only need the sound
