A single trim removes material from the beginning or end. Real edits often need more: remove a long pause, a camera adjustment and a private moment while keeping everything else. The clean way to do this is to define the segments you want to keep, review their order and export the result once.
Think in “keep” segments, not destructive cuts
Marking the good sections has two advantages. First, the source file remains untouched. Second, the final order is visible before processing. A typical one-hour recording might become these retained ranges:
- 00:00:12 to 00:08:40 — introduction and first topic
- 00:10:05 to 00:26:18 — main explanation
- 00:28:02 to 00:44:11 — demonstration
- 00:46:30 to 00:58:52 — conclusion
The pauses between those ranges never have to overwrite the source. They are simply absent from the output plan.
Step-by-step workflow
- Create a project. Add the source and save a .fvcjproject before making many detailed selections.
- Watch at accelerated speed. Use the preview to locate large unwanted regions, then slow down near a transition.
- Mark the first good range. Set the start and end around the useful content and add it to the keep list.
- Repeat for every retained section. Give each segment a quick transition review.
- Check order and overlaps. Make sure no good moment is missing and no unwanted section is accidentally retained.

Where to place a cut
For speech, leave enough room for the natural beginning and decay of a word. Cutting exactly at visible silence can still clip a consonant or room tone. For music, cut at a phrase or beat and avoid breaking sustained notes. For screen recordings, leave a fraction of a second after a click so viewers can understand the result.
Use project save, undo and recovery
Multi-segment edits are valuable work. Save the project rather than relying on memory. Undo and redo are useful while experimenting, while project recovery protects against an interrupted session. A project file is not a replacement for the original video: keep both until the final output is verified.
Smart Cut across multiple segments
Each retained segment has its own start and end boundary. A keyframe-safe copy may adjust one or more boundaries. That can be completely acceptable for removing long pauses, but it may be visible in rapid dialogue. If every transition must land exactly, use an encoded output.
Prevent abrupt audio jumps
- Listen to both sides of every transition with headphones.
- Avoid cutting in the middle of a word, breath or transient sound.
- Keep a small amount of room tone when it improves continuity.
- If clips come from different sources, inspect loudness and channel layout.
- Check subtitle timing after removing sections.

Retain short moments in the desired order. A normalized encoded output is usually safer when the highlights come from different cameras or phones.
